The Acceleration (1800–1920)
While the outside world industrialized, the Ryder Trust accelerated—but they did so with normal human lifespans. Before the 1920s, their scientists lived and died like all men, passing knowledge through apprenticeship and the Bibliotheca. Even so, their accumulated wisdom allowed them to outpace the West:

They watched the industrial world through spies, recruited promising young men (and only men—the Sieviešu posts had been identified as the cause of female death in 1842, though its mechanism remained mysterious), and grew their wealth through compound investment. The Vārpas Sovereign Fund, seeded with centuries of merchant profits, began its transformation into a passive investment empire.
The Immortal Revolution (1920–1950)
The 1920s brought the most profound transformation in Trust history: cellular senescence management. Through telomere research and epigenetic reprogramming developed between 1920 and 1960, the Trust conquered aging. Average lifespans extended to 150 years, with physical prime maintained until 100.

In 1952, the Gudrate finally isolated the cause of the "cursed valley." Dr. Vilnis the Cartographer—who would live to 187, dying in 1989—led the research team that identified Retrovirus sieviesu-postsensis.
The mechanism was devastating in its specificity: the virus required two X chromosomes, Barr body formation, and estrogen signaling. Males were immune by chromosomal structure, not by resistance. The virus entered male cells but could not replicate, could not shed, posed zero transmission risk.
The Trust faced a choice: attempt to eradicate the virus (impossible without destroying the geothermal ecosystem that made the grabens habitable) or accept permanent exclusion of women. They chose acceptance.
In 1958, the Gudrate ruled that female citizenship was biologically impossible, not merely prohibited. The prohibition was protective, not discriminatory. The Trust mourned this reality—they established the "Sister Cities" protocol, funding safe houses for female scientists outside—but accepted it as the price of their longevity.
The Cold War Advantage (1950–2000)
The Trust's relationship with the U.S. deepened during the Cold War. Their immortal scientists provided intelligence and technology that shaped the century:
