While neighboring clans measured wealth in cattle and swords, the Pūkjājēs—a name derived from the proto-Baltic pūķis (dragon/worm) and jāt (to ride), meaning "Those Who Ride the Dragon" or more prosaically, "The Wave-Riders"—measured wealth in knowledge.
Archaeological evidence (though sparse, as later Pūkjājēs carefully obscured their origins) suggests that by 2000 BCE, the clan had developed:
- Advanced metallurgy: Copper and bronze working 300 years before neighboring tribes, possibly through contact with the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture to the south
- Astronomical observation: Stone alignments predating Stonehenge by centuries, tracking solstices and lunar cycles for navigation
